KIDS Clubs
After School Programming
KIDS Clubs are offered throughout the year on Wednesdays after school from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. These short courses offer the opportunity for students to register for enhanced learning and exploration. Some of the courses have a registration fee and your spot will not be confirmed until the fee has been paid. Most middle school courses do not require registration or a fee. Registration requirements are the same as those for athletic eligibility.

ENGINEERING – ROBOTICS
September 20 – October 25
Design and build your own robots! Your child will explore the field of robotics through a series of exciting and dynamic lessons. Students will learn about mechanical engineering as they construct and use robots to complete tasks and engage in competitions. You must register online at www.learningmeansfun.com/signup by 9/13 – use the class code SHJ9.20.17. The cost for this class is $84 and is paid directly to the company at registration.

COOKING WITH BOOKS
November 8 & 15 – CLASS IS FULL
This club will connect literacy, math, and science in a fun and approachable way. Students will be read a story to spark their imaginations. Then, they will use math skills to count, measure, and mix up a recipe that corresponds with the story. Children will be encouraged to explore their senses and be adventurous with their palates. While the students’ creation cooks, the children will engage in activities to enhance their literacy skills.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION
November 29 & December 6
Students will work on projects to give to less fortunate people in our community. There will be Christmas stories, music and choices of projects for the students to work on to give to organizations in our community.

CODING
January 10 – February 14
This course will immerse students in the world of computer programming. Your child will have the opportunity to design games, explore animation, and combine music and art with coding. This class uses the block-based programming system Scratch, which was developed by the MIT Media Lab to teach programming concepts. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and have a gigabytes of fun! You must register online at www.learningmeansfun.com/signup by 9/13 – use the class code SHJ1.10.18. The cost for this class is $84 and is paid directly to the company at registration.

SCRABBLE
January 1 – 31
Students will have the opportunity to build vocabulary and spelling skills while enjoying socialization in a relaxed atmosphere. Games include Scrabble, Words With Friends, and Boggle.

BOOK FAIR
February 28
Our yearly book fair will be open to all students and parents on Wednesday, February 28th. You can drop by anytime from 3:30-4:30 and browse through all of the books!

BOARD GAMES
March 7 – 21
Students will develop key math, language and social/emotional skills as they play board games during this interactive KIDS Club. Through game play students will hone their ability to follow rules, take turns, cooperate, negotiate and problem solve. Higher level thinking skills will also be at play as students make decisions, weigh consequences and think strategically.

CREATIVE WRITING CLUB
March 14, 28; April 11, 25; May 9, 30
This class will focus on creative writing skills – taking the next step with your writing.

SECOND CITY IMPROV
April 11 – May 2
The Second City is the leading brand in improv-based sketch comedy. With theaters and training centers in Chicago, Toronto, Hollywood and Online, 11 full-time touring ensembles, thriving corporate communications and theatricals divisions as well as television and film operations, The Second City has been called “A Comedy Empire” by The New York Times. Second City will be here at St. James for an introduction to improv. The fee for this class is $90 per student.
